The annual Reality Store is tailored for area seventh and 10th graders at the Journey Church’s FOR Center. Murray/ Calloway Middle and Murray/Calloway County High school students are assigned a salary. Then, after being given a paycheck, they handle bills, expenses, as well as unexpected expenditures. Murray Middle students attended on Tuesday and Murray High School students attended today.

The 20-year program is hosted by the Calloway County Cooperative Extension Office and staffed by volunteers in the community who operate 17 different booths spread throughout the building.

The Murray Independent School District is appreciative of this hands-on life-lesson opportunity, and the numerous community volunteers who make it possible. #murrayschools

Murray Elementary School third grader, Poem Wiley, was named the area one winner of the 2025 Conservation Writing and Jim Claypool Art Competition. Her wetlands depiction “If You Like Critters Keep Wetlands Safe,” was recognized at a state reception in Frankfort at the Historic Castle. Wiley also won a $75 Wal-Mart from the local Conservation District Office and a $50 check from Farm Bureau at the state level.
Thousands of students have participated in the Jim Claypool Art and Conservation Writing contests since their introduction in 1974 and 1944, respectively. The contests educate students on soil, water, forestry and wildlife conservation. Students take the knowledge they have gained and transform it into creative artwork and essays. Students can earn monetary prizes on the county, regional and state levels. They are also recognized each year by conservation districts around the state.
The contest is made possible through the hard work and dedication of sponsors such as the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation, Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts and 121 conservation districts across the state.
“I like art because it’s creative and makes me happy and think more,” said Wiley. “This (competition) made me feel brave, confident, and proud of myself.”
Wiley is the daughter of Matthew and Sara Wiley
