Murray Middle School eighth grade students in Ashley Smith’s science class wrapped us their Human Impact on the Environment unit with a focus on climate change. To showcase their understanding of concepts, students participated in a Shark Tank style design challenge.
The project entailed students in teams selecting two or three solutions for review and combining them as an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Students designed and pitched these solutions to the “Sharks,” on presentation day. Each group gave a two-minute pitch and “Sharks” were tasked with: identify strength of the solution, a concern or limitation and decide whether to invest, invest with changes, or not invest in the solution.
Smith said the students worked hard during the unit to understand the effect of carbon emissions on earth’s systems. “This unit led to students to make connections to their own lives and realize the small things they can do to reduce carbon emissions. Many also realized the importance of a global connection to reduce the effects of carbon emissions, and not one country will fix it all,” she said. “The culminating project really shows what students felt would be the best solutions to reduce our carbon emissions and show off some of those creative skills.”

Murray Middle School fourth grade students and teachers extend a special thanks to the MISD Foundation For excellence for their generously awarding a grant to support MMS fourth grade math classrooms. The grant enabled the purchase of Versatiles, an engaging, hands-on learning resource that strengthens students’ understanding of key mathematical concepts.
Versatiles provides students opportunities to practice skills such as place value, problem-solving, and computation in an interactive and self-checking format. This allows students to work independently while receiving immediate feedback, building both confidence and accuracy. These materials are especially valuable in small group instruction and math stations, where students can reinforce skills in a meaningful and engaging way.
Through the MISD Foundation For Excellence, students have access to high-quality resources that promote deeper understanding and foster a positive attitude toward mathematics. “The impact of this grant will be felt daily as students actively engage in learning and develop the skills necessary for academic success,” said Allison Haynes, MMS fourth grade Math teacher.
“Thank you for your continued commitment to enriching educational opportunities for our students,” said Kayla Boward, MMS fourth grade Math teacher. #murrayschools
