Murray High School and Calloway County High School Leadership Tomorrow Class members attended Agriculture Day at the MSU Equine and Expo Centers. Students met with Dr. Kristie Guffey, MSU Professor, Graduate Coordinator of Hutson School of Agriculture, for the third annual Raising Hope Farmer Appreciation Day. Students from numerous FFA Kentucky FFA Chapters were also in attendance. A Murray State University Block and Bridle Student group provided lunch to attendees. While there, vendors were on site to answer questions about specific agriculture careers and the course of college studies. A special visit was made by Miss Kentucky Ariana Rodriguez who spoke to the students about her childhood in foster care, and her role as Miss Kentucky 2025. Rodriguez travels the state representing the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) as a spokesperson for their Kentucky Proud initiative.

After lunch, Leadership Tomorrow students toured Colston Farms in Farmington, Ky. Calyn Colston, Calloway County Extension Agent 4-H Youth Development at UK Cooperative, provided an insight into she and her family’s first generation, small family farm producing grass hay, maple syrup, and baked goods. Students watched demonstrations of maple syrup production, while also having hands-on experience tapping trees for maple syrup. #murrayschools

In recognition Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, the Murray/Calloway County hospital is partnering with Abby Dowdy, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, to host "Hope & Healing," today September 23, 2025. The event will be held in The Murray Room at the CFSB Center (Entrance A) from 3 to 4:30 p.m., and is free to the public. and will be held in The Murray Room at the CFSB Center – (Entrance A).

A Murray native and a Murray High School graduate, Dowdy has returned her hometown community to practice as the first and only Psychologist at Murray Calloway County Hospital. She completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Kentucky University in 2020. Prior to that, she received a master’s degree from the University of Indianapolis and an Undergraduate degree from Transylvania University.

The event is to raise awareness about suicide, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and connect the community with critical prevention resources. “Our goal is to open the conversation, support those affected, and help our community know they are not alone,” said Dr. Abby Dowdy. “Every life matters, and together we can foster hope and healing.”

A moment of silence will honor those lost to suicide and offer support to families and friends impacted by such loss. Mental health support will be available on-site for anyone in need during the event. All are welcome, including individuals, families, educators, healthcare workers, and community partners. Attendees will also have access to a resource fair with local organizations offering support, information, and services. #murrayschools

D. If you are new to the program and have never volunteered with the MISD a $10 fee is required to complete your background check at the state. Once the $10 is paid—the background check is good for five years. However, a yearly training is required. The $10 will need to be dropped off at the board office with your paperwork.
E. If you have volunteered before and know you have a background check on file-you will need to check to see if the background check is still good, or a new one is required.
F. To check verification please email sherry.purdom@murray.kyschools.us before submitting you completed paperwork.
G. Do not submit paperwork until you have checked the expiration of your background check. Submitting paperwork without this verification will not be approved until this step is completed.
If a new background check is not required, all forms may be emailed to sherry.purdom@murray.kyschools. However, if a new background check is required, please submit all paperwork to the MISD Board Office, 208 S. 13th Street, with $10. (Checks should be made to the MISD).
*Please note if you are a former employee of the MISD and a six-month lapse has occurred since your employment, a new background check will be required.

Murray High School " Welcome to The Jungle Homecoming," is celebrated today at Murray High School, as members of the 1965 and 1975 graduating classes visited Murray High School classes and students. A light lunch was provided by the Murray High School Alumni & Friends Association in the library. MHS alumni from the 1965 and 1975 classes, Ben Humphrey(65), Joe Ward(65), Mark Williams(75) and Marti Erwin(65) spoke to MHS classes about their days at MHS and their careers after high school graduation.

MHS alumni from the 1975 class and members of the 1974 State Championship Football team, spoke to the MHS football team members in the John Hina Fieldhouse describing their days as MHS Football players. 1974 State Championship Football alumni, Dale McCuiston, Steve Porter ,Doug Shelton, and Craig Suiter, were the former football team speakers. Former assistant coach of the 1974 state championship team, Mark Brady, also spoke to current players.

Melvin Cunningham, MHS Football Coach and members of the football presented these alumni with former playing jerseys with their 1974 respective numbers from their MHS playing days. Dr. David Meinschein, EdD., MISD superintendent, was on hand to greet alumni.

Members of the 1965 class are celebrating their 60-Year reunion, and 1975 graduates are celebrating their 50-Year reunion. Groups will be at the game this evening as MHS Tigers play the Marshall County Marshals. Kick-off time is 7 p.m., with crowing of the football queen at 6:40 p.m.

In recognition of National Grandparent's Day-Murray Elementary School students have honored their grandparents this week. A Volunteer Training has been scheduled for Monday, September 15 @ 9 a.m. at the MISD Board Office, 208 S. 13th Street. This is a special called volunteer training. If your schedule has not allowed you to attend an in-person training, this is a great opportunity. Especially if you want to volunteer in the next few weeks. The ONLINE TRAINING will not be available until the end of September. Remember, there is no registration required.

Currently, we have 418 approved volunteers who have attended in-person trainings. We applaud our volunteers and invite you to be a part of our Black and Gold Volunteers.
