“It is a privilege to welcome this exceptional group of students to Murray State University,” said University President Dr. Ron K. Patterson. “Their dedication to academic excellence is remarkable, and we are proud to provide a rigorous, high-impact curriculum that will inspire, challenge, and support each of our Presidential Fellows as they work toward their professional and personal aspirations.”
Students selected for the Presidential Fellowship scholarship complete a rigorous multi-step application process that includes multiple in-person interviews. During their time at Murray State, recipients of the scholarship are responsible for conducting extensive research projects and serving as leaders in the campus community.
“Our Presidential Fellows are all outstanding academic achievers, but they are also selected based on their demonstrated leadership potential and service to their communities,” said Dr. Jessica Naber, director of the Honors College.
“Presidential Fellows engage in undergraduate research under the guidance of a faculty mentor and frequently publish their work before leaving Murray State,” Naber added. “Besides excelling in research, Presidential Fellows often take leadership roles in student groups, ranging from the Student Government Association to Greek organizations. Fellows also participate in Education Abroad programs, developing adaptability and cultural understanding.”
Incoming first-year students who have a 28 ACT composite score minimum (or 1250 SAT verbal and math combined score minimum), along with a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale, are eligible to apply for the Presidential Fellowship scholarship. Murray High School English II Honors students in Gillian Miller-Sullivan’s’s class participated in an MISD TedTalk. Students were given an assignment and prompt by Miller for them to prepare their debate:
You have been appointed to the superintendent’s student advisory board, a coveted position with real influence. In this role, you are tasked with proposing an entirely new policy that would impact students across the MISD. This responsibility is not symbolic; your proposal must be supported with credible research and persuasive rhetorical appeals.
Students selected their topics, performed research, and delivered them during an afterschool session inside their classroom for MISD administrators who were invited.

The Murray High Academic Team placed 21st out of 88 teams from across the nation at their first appearance at the NAQT Small Schools National Championship in Chicago, Ill. The MHS Academic Team won seven out of ten preliminary games and earned a ticket to the playoffs with an outstanding 425-145 victory over a previously undefeated 13th ranked team whose only loss all day was to MHS. MHS had its highest score in the entire tournament in that match against what should have been the toughest competition of the weekend. Coaches Wesley Bolin and Adam Pitman shared that "It is a delight as teachers and coaches to witness your students performing at the highest level in perfect sync."
Captain Selvam Antony placed 33rd out of 515 individual players and the entire varsity starting team placed in the top 40 percent of the competition.
The Murray High trip to NAQT Nationals was made possible with generous financial support from the MISD Foundation for Excellence and MISD School Board member Robyn Pizzo. The team also deeply appreciates the support of MHS chemistry teacher and incoming KAAC President Jeremy Krug who accompanied them throughout the National Championship.

Teresa Cope, author of Preston’s Adventures, recently read to the Murray Preschool HeadStart students at Whitten Center. Copeland read “The Wagon,” a first in a series of several books Cope plans to write about her late son, Preston Cope. Cope passed away in 2018 at 15. Cope, a Marshall County Elementary School teacher who is set to retire this year, said Preston was kind, caring, and loving beyond measure. One of Preston’s greatest joys was reading, and he was rarely without a book. Through Cope's writing, Cope hopes to share Preston’s sweet spirit and honor his legacy through literature.
Mrs. Cope thanks for sharing your story with our preschool students!

Students in Amy McCann's first grade class have been producing podcasts this past year. The students started working on their research for their last podcast of the year. Students selected their own topic and performed research and wrote their segment themselves. "It is so cool to watch them in action and see how far they have come," McCann said.
Amina Spencer chose money as her topic because of their math study and she finds interesting. Amina does the introduction, then shares facts she has learned about money. Amina then interviewed her classmates, and Mrs. Purdom, MISD Public Information Officer. During the interview they were asked how they would spend $100.
The students in Mrs. McCann's class have had a wonderful time producing the podcasts throughout the year. To hear Amina Spencer's Podcast #14, and other podcasts by students, visit:
