Murray, Ky., March 7, 2024----Alexis Broker, Murray Middle School fifth grade student, was named second place winner in the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year writing competition. Sponsored by AARP Kentucky and Kentucky Retired Teachers Association (KRTA), Broker received a certificate and letter recognizing her award in the “Why my Grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year., essay competition.”

“The time and effort you spent writing this essay is a great honor to your Grandparent and celebrates the importance of grandparents in the lives of children everywhere,” said Christine Jackson, AARP Program analyst, in the award letter Broker received.

Broker wrote about her “Papa” grandfather, Bobby Teague, who saved someone’s life from a burning car fire.  “He is brave and heroic for that. He won an award for it along with Police Officers.  The doctor said if my papa didn’t pull him out when he did, he would have died.  If my papa was brave enough to save a life and get a reward, he is capable of getting a grandparent reward too,” Broker wrote in her essay.

Teague, who is retired, was home the day the car accident occurred, and he heard a noise outside his home. After seeing the car when he walked outside, he noticed the car was on fire and someone was unconscious inside the vehicle.  Teague considers himself blessed to have been at the right place at the right time that day.

Delaney Embry, Broker’s MMS teacher, complimented Broker’s writing talent.  “She always tries her best and goes the extra mile. I am so excited she won this contest! She deserves it.”

Embry said when she announced the competition to the class, Broker was quick to start writing about her grandfather.   “Her story about him was so inspiring and I knew others needed to hear about it. I am so proud of her hard work and dedication to her schoolwork--Not only is she a great student, but also a great friend to her other classmates.
