Over 2,000 applications are received at the state level each year, with approximately 1,000 students selected to attend.
The Governor's Scholars Program for 2025 has selected many students across Kentucky for its prestigious, five-week summer residential program. This program, designed to enhance Kentucky's next generation of civic and economic leaders, offers a rigorous academic curriculum, leadership skills development, and career pathway exploration. Students are selected from a highly competitive pool. This year's Governor Scholars will meet at one of three Kentucky universities this summer for the five-week program at one of the following sites: Centre College, Morehead State University, and Murray State University.
The core curriculum for these summer sessions is threefold:
Focus Area: Courses that allow a student to pursue a topic in-depth as a member of a small group stressing the development of ideas in the chosen discipline, with the option of additional independent study.
General Studies: Classes emphasize inquiry, service-learning, community leadership, and resolution development.
Leadership Seminar: Personal development seminars that stress concerns and problems faced by students, including such subjects as values clarification, career choice, and interpersonal relationships.
Governor Scholars are selected from across Kentucky and represent the diversity of the Commonwealth. The program is singularly free from competition, creating an environment that is conducive to building a community of friends and colleagues. The program offers Scholars a chance to know and make friends with other enthusiastic, energetic students with high intellectual capacities. The give-and-take among Scholars from different backgrounds is one of the most treasured aspects of the program.
